MSSO is going to the Vienna International Competition
June 26- July 9, 2023

Montreal Suzuki String Orchestra European Tour Summer 2023  

 

This June the Montreal Suzuki String Orchestra, under the direction of conductor and Suzuki teacher, Dragan Djerkic, will participate in the Summa Cum Laude International Youth Music Festival.

 

This exciting orchestral project involving thirty string students from Montreal, Kingston, Kitchener-Waterloo and Vermont will perform in prestigious concert halls in Europe including the Smetana Concert Hall in Prague,  the Musikverein and Koncerthouse Halls in Vienna.

 

Another highlight will be the joint concert with the Norway Østfold Ungdomsorkester Orchestra at Haydn Hall in Eisenstadt.

 

In Bratislava, the MSSO Orchestra will participate in the Opening Ceremony of the  Bratislava competition in the historic St. Martin’s Cathedral. The actual competition venues include the Slovak Radio Hall in Bratislava and Vienna. 

 

The MSSO repertoire includes works by  Bartok, Holberg, Tchaikovsky, Vivaldi, Elgar and Grieg MSSO with the world premiere of noted Montreal composer Leo Purich's 'SAMARAS: Passacaglia for Strings' (Op.143). This work was commissioned specifically for the MSSO Orchestra 2023 European tour.

 

Before their departure for Europe, MSSO musicians will have an intensive four-day June retreat with the Montreal send-off concert on Sunday,  June 18th in Oscar Peterson Hall. 

 

This exciting Montreal Suzuki String Orchestra 2023  initiative marks the first post-pandemic Canadian inter Suzuki class European tour. 

 

Inspired by the vision of Maestro Dragan Djerkic and supported by a wonderful team of Montreal parent volunteers, the tour is sure to be a memorable musical experience for European audiences and performers alike.
